Preheat oven to 325°F.

Melt the butter in large baking dish by setting it in the oven until melted. Put the sliced turnips in the baking dish and toss with the melted butter, then sprinkle the salt, pepper, and nutmeg over them. Lay a piece of parchment paper directly on top of the turnips, and wrap the baking dish tightly with a double thickness of foil. Bake in the preheated oven until tender, about 1 hour. Remove from the oven, and use a fork or potato masher to mash the turnips coarsely. Taste carefully for seasoning, and adjust if needed. Serve the turnips hot.
